How do Philippine Cable Television works with Skyworth G6 Series

Cable Television  is a system of delivering television programming to consumers via radio frequency (RF) signals transmitted through coaxial cables, or in more recent systems, light pulses through fiber-optic cables. This contrasts with broadcast television (also known as terrestrial television), in which the television signal is transmitted over the air by radio waves and received by a television antenna attached to the television; or satellite television, in which the television signal is transmitted by a communications satellite orbiting the Earth and received by a satellite dish on the roof. FM radio programming, high-speed Internet, telephone services, and similar non-television services may also be provided through these cables. Analog television was standard in the 20th century, but since the 2000s, cable systems have been upgraded to digital cable operation.

A "cable channel" (sometimes known as a "cable network") is a television network available via cable television. When available through satellite television, including direct broadcast satellite providers.

Cable Television Distribution

To receive cable television at a given location, cable distribution lines must be available on the local utility poles or underground utility lines. Coaxial cable brings the signal to the customer's building through a service drop, an overhead or underground cable. There are two standards for cable television; older analog cable, and newer digital cable which can carry data signals used by digital television receivers such as HDTV equipment.

Analog Cable Distribution:
The older analog cable television sets are "cable ready" and can receive the old analog cable without a set-top box. However, if it receive a digital cable channels on an analog television set, the G6 series will process the decryption of the broadcast signal because most digital cable channels are now encrypted, or "scrambled", to reduce cable service theft.

Digital Cable Distribution

To distribute a digital signal, most cable companies require a set-top box to view their cable channels, even on newer televisions with digital cable QAM tuners, because most digital cable channels are now encrypted, or "scrambled", to reduce cable service theft. A cable from the jack in the wall is attached to the input of the box, and an output cable from the box is attached to the television, usually the RF-IN or composite input on older TVs. Since the set-top box only decodes the single channel that is being watched, each television in the house requires a separate box. Some unencrypted channels, usually traditional over-the-air broadcast networks, can be displayed without a receiver box. The cable company will provide set top boxes based on the level of service a customer purchases, from basic set top boxes with a standard definition picture connected through the standard coaxial connection on the TV, to high-definition wireless DVR receivers connected via HDMI or component.

What is a set-top box?

A set-top box (STB) or set-top unit (STU) (one type also colloquially known as a cable box) is an information appliance device that generally contains a TV-tuner input and displays output to a television set and an external source of signal, turning the source signal into content in a form that then be displayed on the television screen or other display device. They are used in cable television, satellite television, and over-the-air television systems, as well as other uses.

TV Aerial Broadcast

TV Aerial Broadcast

A television antenna, or TV aerial, is an antenna specifically designed for the reception of over-the-air broadcast television signals, which are transmitted at frequencies from about 41 to 250 MHz in the VHF band, and 470 to 960 MHz in the UHF band here in the Philippines. Television antennas are manufactured in two different types: "indoor" antennas, to be located on top of or next to the television set, and "outdoor" antennas, mounted on a mast on top of the owner's house.

Conclusion:
On analog cable distribution, signal from cable companies is directly feed to Skyworth G6 Series and this signal will process by the TV. Therefore, if the TV tuner is not compatible or cannot decode or cannot process the signal correctly, it will display distorted video or come up with distorted sound.

While on Digital Cable Distribution, the cable company provide set-top box. The set-top box will process or decodes the signal that is being display on Skyworth G6 series screen. Therefore, cable distribution with set-top box, the TV is only display the video and deliver the sound through it's inputs.

On the other hand, the aerial broadcast is not encrypted. Therefore, it will be compatible to any type of tuner.

Based on the above conclusions, Skyworth 6G series tuner is not compatible or cannot decode properly the signal feed by cable companies here in the Philippines.
